🌏 Volunteering in Ngawi, Indonesia – A Heartfelt Teaching Experience 🇮🇩

If you read my last blog post, you’ll know that my journey to Indonesia was far from smooth. From multi-day travel delays to misplaced luggage, I faced my fair share of challenges before even setting foot in this beautiful country.

But as soon as I arrived in Ngawi, East Java, everything changed—and in the best way possible. Just a few days in, and I can confidently say: this experience has been nothing short of amazing.

✨ How I Got Here: Worldpackers & the Power of Skill Exchange

Thanks to Worldpackers, a platform that connects travellers with hosts around the world in exchange for skills like teaching, I found myself in a small yet vibrant community in Ngawi. The platform is all about cultural immersion, shared experiences, and meaningful connections—and that’s exactly what I’ve experienced so far.

Here, I’ve had the opportunity to teach English at a local school, and the experience has been deeply fulfilling. I work with four groups:
🧒 Two kids’ classes
👧 One teen class
🧑 One adult class

Most of my learners are beginners, but like any group, each student brings unique strengths. Some speak more confidently than others, but what they all share is curiosity, enthusiasm, and a genuine eagerness to learn. And that makes every lesson incredibly rewarding.

🎓 From Online Tutor to Classroom Teacher

Coming from a background in one-on-one online tutoring, adjusting to in-person group classes was a learning curve. I had to quickly adapt—especially when it came to lesson planning and classroom dynamics.

Luckily, I wasn’t alone. The assistant teachers here were incredibly supportive during my first week. They walked me through how to prepare engaging lesson plans that emphasize speaking and communication, helping students gain the confidence to express themselves in English.

That said, I still teach all the classes solo—which has actually been a joy for me! I’m not a shy person and I love working with people, so stepping into the classroom felt natural. I’ve already built strong bonds with my students, and their energy makes every session feel like a shared adventure.

🎉 A Birthday Surprise to Remember

What touched me the most was how the community welcomed me with open arms—especially on my birthday, which was just three days after my arrival! 🎂

To my surprise, the school and my host celebrated with me. My colleagues sang a birthday song and prepared a special basket filled with traditional Indonesian treats, including Kue Klepon, Kue Lapis, and other delightful sweets topped with syrup and coconut shavings. It was a beautiful, unexpected gesture that truly reflected the warmth and generosity of the Indonesian people.

🌍 More Adventures to Come…

Beyond the classroom, I’ve also been exploring East Java—attending cultural events, visiting historical landmarks, and embracing every moment. I’ll be sharing more about these experiences in my next blog post, so stay tuned!

Final Thoughts:
Volunteering in Ngawi has been more than just a teaching experience—it’s been a journey of connection, cultural exchange, and personal growth. I came here to teach English, but I’ve already learned so much more in return.

If you’re considering volunteering abroad or looking to immerse yourself in a new culture while making a difference, I highly recommend looking into opportunities like this. And if you’re one of my students reading this—know that you’re the reason I love what I do. đź’™
